MIT’s CO2GO Application for Your Smartphone

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Those smarties at MIT have done it again: created something interesting an useful that may help us save the planet!

At the SenseableCityLab at MIT, they have come up with a new user interface for our smartphones that they claim could help us save the planet, or at least be more aware of our personal carbon footprint in real time! With the CO2GO app engaged on your smartphone, the systems which are found in almost every smartphone will work to help you make “smarter choices” when it comes to transportation and your personal carbon emissions due to transportation.

How is this possible? Well, by ” making sophisticated use of the sensors contained in a standard smartphone (accelerometer, GPS, …) carried in your pocket, CO2GO deploys an unprecedented algorithm to calculate in real-time the carbon emissions while on the move. It does so by automatically detecting your mode of transportation (walking, biking, train, car, bus, subway,…) while tracking the distance covered.”How cool is this?!

A detailed technical discussion is available if you want to get into the nitty-gritty of how this little application works and could work for you. Check it out and let us know what you think!
