Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a non-profit organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC sets high standards that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable way.
A program of the Rainforest Alliance and accredited by the FSC, SmartWood certifies all types of forests for FSC Forest Management Certification, FSC Chain-of-Custody Certification, FSC Non-Timber Forest Products Certification, and SmartWood Rediscovered Wood Certification.
Founded in 1989, Green Seal is an independent third-party organization that provides science-based environmental certification standards for a wide range of materials, including building materials. They look at the product’s entire life cycle, and manufacturers pay a fee to be evaluated. If they product passes the various certification evaluations, it earns the Green Seal.
The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) is an industry-independent, non-profit organization that oversees the GREENGUARD Certification Program. As an ANSI Authorized Standards Developer, GEI establishes acceptable indoor air standards for indoor products, environments, and buildings. GEI’s mission is to improve public health and quality of life through programs that improve indoor air.
