Think of your home like a system
When beginning the evaluation process of your home's energy
efficiency, it is important to understand that your home operates as a system. It is a system comprised of many different interactive components that must work together to achieve optimal performance. This is important to consider when addressing a home's energy efficiency, because focusing on one aspect without considering another can diminish the overall success of the process.
The home system is made up of three parts:
Part One: The Structure
Often called "the building envelope," the structure of the home works to keep cold air out and warm air in during the winter months, and vice versa in the summer.
Part Two: The Mechanics
The mechanical equipment within your home is broken down into two categories. The first category includes machines that control the indoor environment such as furnaces, air conditioners, and fans. The second category includes machines that perform other necessary tasks like refrigerators, stoves, and computers.
Part Three: The People
The people who live in the home play an active part in this system because they control the shell and the equipment through their behavior and daily activity. This activity has more of an impact on energy efficiency than you may realize. The people affect the movement of heat, air and moisture throughout the home. Lifestyle choices greatly impact the energy efficiency, mainly through use of mechanical equipment and maintenance of the structure.
